Main6 New Best Practices to Implement Now

Three weeks into a new year and decade, some of your resolutions to change have already been wiped off your whiteboard.

Here are the new best practices I see as crucial to kicking off a steady year of improved leadership behavior.

  1. Lessen the power of the past. Yes, those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it, but the familiar has its negatives. Resist the temptation to continue to behave as you always have. What worked last year during crisis mode may not be as effective as the fog of the recession lifts.
  2. Be information transparent. Stop being the feudal lord of information. Share more than you want to, handing over control and power to your team members. Tell them more than you think they need to know.
  3. Have more people take more risks. Risk taking is no longer a management skill. You need more people making more decisions--faster. Help your team be nimble and act upon a balance of gut and good data.
  4. Make innovation the new "required" skill. With less fear of the past, more data, and encouragement to take risks, employees can begin to innovate daily. Help by asking these questions: What feels comfortable? What doesn't? What do our customers want next? What can we change today and implement tomorrow?
  5. Put money back on the table. As the economy stabilizes, employees will ask, "What's up with salaries? Are we getting raises?" What can you afford--in salaries, benefits, 401K matches, and intangible rewards?
  6. Retain top performers as if your livelihood depended on it. Because it does. Many top performers have been using a "sit it out" strategy. Pick 4 functional leaders to speak to top performers, select 4 books to discuss, hold 2 onsite classes from an outside resource, and ask 2 executives to have lunch with the group.  Add up these events: you have a 12 week program. For cheap.
Management Best Practices for Recession Recovery: Special Webinar for SHRM Members  January 21, 2010 at 11 am PDTWebinar

While better times for your organization and team may not yet be the reality, several signs point to an improved 2010.

To prepare for a healthier economy, managers will have to dust off some old management practices while embracing some new ones. Rushing to hire and curtailing 1:1 time and group discussions are two "don't you dare" practices. Emphasizing innovation for everyone's sake is a "must do."

In this webinar, we'll discuss those practices and how they will help your organization, your team members, and your personal professional development.

Participants will receive access to a checklist and template.
